About The Position

The Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) at UC San Diego is responsible for ensuring MRI safety protocols are adhered to within the clinical environment. This role involves advanced training in MRI safety, risk assessment, and the implementation of safety standards in accordance with ACR guidelines. The MRSO will collaborate with clinical staff, manage safety incidents, and lead educational initiatives to promote a safe MRI environment.

Requirements

  • Nine (9) years of MRI experience, education/training; OR a Bachelor's Degree in Radiology, Healthcare Administration or related area plus five (5+) or more years as an MRI Tech
  • In-depth knowledge of QI standards, clinical chart review and abstraction, and regulatory requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of QI models, tools, and techniques
  • Organizational and project management skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for collaboration and mentoring
  • Ability to convey complex information effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Knowledge of various administrative and business software packages
  • Advanced skills to influence and persuade staff and management.

Nice To Haves

  • Registered Technologist for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) issued by ARRT or ARMRIT
  • Previous experience working as an MRSO in a hospital setting
  • MRSO certification at time of hire or within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced MRI safety training
  • Understand the risks posed by the static magnetic field, radiofrequency field, and time varying gradients
  • Interpret MR Conditions and guide front line staff in correcting necessary protocol changes
  • Consider the technical aspects of neurostimulators and cardiac devices
  • Screening of pacemaker implants
  • Respond to various emergencies in the MRI environment
  • Understand risks posed by gadolinium-based contrast agents
  • Implement principles outlined in the ACR Manual on MR Safety
  • Update MRI policies and guidelines to reflect updated MRI safety standards
  • Understand the proper use and implementation of ferromagnetic detection systems
  • Evaluate MRI safety related case studies
  • Ongoing education on implants, new devices, processes, and safety concerns
  • Spearhead any MRI safety iReports
  • Assess safety practices and physical space in line with ACR guidelines
  • Attend committee meetings and report on safety incidents and risk mitigation plans
  • Float to other locations based on department needs
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.
