About The Position

The Commonwealth of Virginia has an opening for a Magistrate position in Magisterial Region 1. A Magistrate is an independent judicial officer appointed by the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Magisterial Region 1 is comprised of the Counties of Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Lee, Montgomery, Pulaski, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, Wythe; and the Cities of Bristol, Galax, Norton, and Radford. The Magistrate may be required to work throughout the Region. The Magistrate's initial assignment will be in Washington County of the Central Magisterial District. The Magistrate must possess a fundamental working knowledge of Virginia ordinances and laws, and have a demonstrated ability to impartially and efficiently apply that knowledge in the resolution of legal issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher learning
• Excellent English speaking, listening, and writing skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Computer proficiency

Nice To Haves

• Preference for law degree or Virginia State Bar license
• Preference for prior legal system experience

Responsibilities

• Conducting neutral and impartial hearings related to searches, arrests, temporary detentions, and bail
• Conducting legal research and analysis
• Ascertaining and applying facts to relevant legal principles
• Maintaining order and decorum in highly charged, sensitive circumstances
• Receiving and accounting for money
