About The Position

The City of Chicago is seeking a skilled Machinist to join the Department of Transportation. This position is responsible for performing journey-level machinist work, which includes the manufacturing, repair, and rebuilding of precision metal parts essential for the maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery. The Machinist will work under supervision and will be expected to follow established procedures and safety protocols while executing their duties. The role requires a strong understanding of blueprints, specifications, and models to determine the necessary work procedures, metal stock, and machine tools required for fabricating parts. The successful candidate will be adept at using both conventional and computer-controlled machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses, to produce high-quality metal components. In addition to fabrication, the Machinist will inspect and dismantle mechanical equipment to identify malfunctions and determine necessary repairs. Precision is key in this role, as the Machinist will utilize various measuring instruments to ensure dimensional accuracy and adherence to specified tolerances during machining operations. The position also involves planning and laying out jobs, making calculations for dimensions, and performing precision handwork to finish and assemble machined parts. The Machinist will be responsible for installing and testing new and repaired parts, preparing work activity reports, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Additional duties may include welding or brazing broken parts and cutting steel as required. This position operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm at the location of 3124 S. Sacramento. The starting salary for this role is $58.39 per hour, and it is open to the public as well as current city employees who are part of the Machinists - Local 126 bargaining unit. Candidates must meet specific qualifications, including successful completion of a registered machinist apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A written job knowledge exam is also a requirement for selection, with candidates being hired based on seniority or lottery/random order after passing the test.
