About The Position

The Machinist Shop Lead is responsible for the safe management of machining and welding personnel, overseeing all machine shop activities including planning, scheduling, and staffing. This role ensures that all assigned Machinist/Welders are properly trained and qualified according to customer safety, technical requirements, and company quality assurance programs. Key responsibilities include maintaining various machines, reviewing customer contractual requirements, coordinating with HSE and Quality Assurance Managers, establishing operating budgets with the Operations and General Managers, and developing and implementing quality and safety metrics. The Lead will also conduct job reviews, participate in customer service and quotation processes, manage material sourcing, ensure accurate timesheets, attend production meetings, support the accounting department, uphold company standards, collaborate with product principals, manage after-hour and weekend on-call rotations, and foster strong internal and external relationships. Travel is required as applicable.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent
  • Minimum 10+ years of supervisory experience IF no supervisory experience, then 10+ years of Machining and/or valve service experience is required
  • TWIC, OSHA Safety, and other statutory or regulatory certifications

Responsibilities

  • Safely manage personnel as applicable who perform machining and welding processes
  • Develop and oversee planning and scheduling for Machine shop activities including advance staffing requirements
  • Ensure Machinist/Welders assigned to projects are trained and or qualified to the task and customer safety and technical requirements in addition to the company quality assurance program
  • Responsible for maintaining the following machines: milling machine, VTL, drill press, surface grinder, horizontal mill, broach, key seating machine, OD grinder, manual lathes, honing tools, band and cut-off saw, and Lap Master
  • Responsible for periodic review of customer contractual requirements for machining/welding services to ensure this information is effectively transferred to the technicians
  • Works in conjunction with the company HSE Coordinator to maintain current information required for Machinists/Welding personnel in ISNetworld, PICS, PEC, etc.
  • Works in conjunction with the company Quality Assurance Manager to verify all quality control procedure requirements are followed for Machining and Welding services up to and including site quality audits
  • Works in concert with the Operations Manager to establish an operating budget for service personnel, equipment and supply needs in conjunction with the General Manager to meet the demands of a growing service business in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Develop and implement quality and safety metrics that gauge the effectiveness of our field services performance (safety, quality, and customer satisfaction) and reported on a scheduled frequency
  • Conduct and or coordinate job reviews as needed to develop comprehensive job scopes and manpower plans
  • Attends pre-turnaround and post-turnaround planning meetings as applicable
  • Participates with the customer service team (Repair Coordinators) to complete quotations for service opportunities and post-job billing preparation
  • Works in conjunction with purchasing for sourcing materials, supplies, and subcontract services as applicable for Machining/Welding activities
  • Ensures time sheets prepared during field services and time clock entries for shop services are accurate, approved by the customer, received at the home facility, and entered at the agreed upon timeframe
  • Attends the all daily production meetings to report and stay abreast of overall Machining/Welding services activities
  • Ensures that Machinists and Welders are properly trained so as to contribute efficiently and productively to the John H Carter organization
  • Supports JHC accounting department with problem invoices and general customer account information
  • Understands and ensures that the JHC TCC (Total Customer Commitment) standards are upheld at all times
  • Works closely with and supports the JHC product principals when required to do so
  • Manages and enforces the after-hour and weekend ‘On-Call’ rotation in conjunction with other shop supervision
  • Actively and enthusiastically supports JHC colleagues at all times
  • Builds and cultivates solid relationships – internally and externally
  • Travels when required and applicable
