About The Position
The position involves operating machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, milling machines, grinders, or special purpose equipment according to production specifications and needs. The role requires verifying the conformance of machined work to specifications using measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and fixed or telescoping gauges. The operator will read and interpret machining instructions, job orders, and blueprints to determine dimensional specifications, sequences of operations, setups, and tooling requirements. Additionally, the operator will select and set cutting speeds, feed rates, depths of cuts, and cutting tools based on machining instructions or knowledge of metal properties. Safety operating procedures must be followed throughout projects, and communication with technicians regarding machine maintenance or failures may be necessary. The operator may also communicate with senior management on special projects and utilize specifications specific to project needs. The work is performed under direct supervision, handling basic issues and problems while referring more complex issues to higher-level staff. A beginning to working knowledge of the subject matter is typically required, along with accreditation from a technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and 4 to 6 years of experience.
