Job Summary: The Machinist Lead is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of CNC and manual machine tools to support production, repair, tool, and experimental work. This role performs intricate machining to close and exacting tolerances, producing or modifying metal workpieces in accordance with customer specifications. In addition to hands-on machining, the Machinist Lead provides guidance and training to team members, supports shop coverage needs, and ensures consistent quality, safety, and efficiency across operations.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of CNC and manual machining processes.
  • Ability to operate various types of machine tools to perform progressive machining.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical drawings.
  • Strong experience working to tight tolerances and quality standards.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools and inspection techniques.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and support team members.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and safety practices.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to work across multiple shop functions as needed.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or trade school preferred.
  • Typically requires 3–5 years of machining experience, with demonstrated leadership or lead responsibilities preferred.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds at times.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with varied conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up and operates CNC and conventional machine tools to produce and modify parts for production, maintenance, and repair.
  • Plans and sequences machine operations, including work where processes are not pre-established.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings to determine specifications, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Selects and uses appropriate tools and equipment to cut, shape, and finish metal, plastic, or composite materials.
  • Perform precision machining to close tolerances and ensure all work meets customer and quality requirements.
  • Inspects finished parts using precision measuring instruments to verify accuracy and compliance.
  • Assembles machined components into sub-units or complete units as required.
  • Sets up, services, and performs basic maintenance on equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with company standards.
  • Provides training, guidance, and support to new and less experienced machinists.
  • Supports shop operations across multiple areas (e.g., hand finishing, autofrettage, or other processes) and backfills roles as needed for absences or critical coverage gaps.
  • Works flexible hours, including overtime or weekends, as required to meet production demands.
  • Collaborates with team members and leadership to meet production goals and timelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
