The position involves setting up, adjusting, and operating various sizes and types of engine lathes, pullbores, trepan, and push boring machines. The machinist will operate multiple machines simultaneously and determine setups to ensure concentricity to very close tolerances over considerable lengths. Responsibilities include selecting speeds, feeds, and tooling, as well as determining the sequence of operations to meet dimensional and finish requirements. The machinist may need to improvise and grind tooling to accommodate varying materials and operating conditions. Additionally, the role involves making or assisting other machinists in setups, adjusting equipment based on unusual sounds or cutting problems, checking one's own work, and possibly assisting in the development of tooling for special purposes. Machine clean-outs may also be required to facilitate production.
