The Thermal Spray Operator in the Engines business line is responsible for delivering manufacturing engineering solutions to the Operations organization. Thermal Spray Operators provide the review, planning and production support necessary to create and maintain manufacturing build documentation that will ensure all deliverables are in full conformance with the customer's requirements and GKN's engineering, procedures and specification requirements.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • 3+ years of thermal spray experience in lieu of degree.
  • 1+ years of experience working with precision measuring equipment, gages and hand tools to assure quality standards are maintained is preferred.
  • 1+ years of experience working with machining of various metallic and composite materials.

  • Previous Fan Blade, Fan Disk or Aircraft Engine component repair experience.
  • Process implementation of Shot Peen, Eddy Current Inspection, Etch/Cleaning of Titanium alloys, EB Weld, FPI, Immersion Ultrasonic testing or Robotic Grind/Blend of titanium.
  • Automation integration, programming or implementation of robotic systems for Aerospace applications with working knowledge of SCADA.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN processes and practices.
  • Working knowledge of quality system models such as ISO9000, AS9100, or D1-9000.
  • Demonstrated experience with AS-9145 Zero Defect Manufacturing, or equivalent automotive PPAP experience.
  • Experience with New Product / Process introduction (industrialization) & existing production process improvements.
  • Knowledge of statistics and statistical process control (SPC) using Minitab.
  • Strong background with Microsoft Office tools, especially Excel.

Responsibilities

  • The Thermal Spray Operator should have previous experience with Thermal Spray methodologies for equipment setup and operation of HVOF & Jet Coat processes.
  • Must be able to work closely with Metlab personnel to evaluate pass/fail criteria of thermal sprayed coupons.
  • Familiar with abrasive blasting equipment and have the ability to run spray paths to support the thermal spray processes.
  • Responsible for introducing technical improvement initiatives for MRO operations related to Aerospace Fan Blade or Fan Disk engine components.
  • Familiar with general shop safety practices, and should be familiar with creating and updating shop travelers, work instructions, operation sheets, tool orders, BOM’s and change management documents.
  • Deliver measurable, metrics driven results in line with Operational goals.
  • Maintain positive, team relationships with internal and external customers, as well as co-workers.
  • Continuously improve production processes by implementing Lean initiatives.
  • Develop technical solutions to complex problems.
  • Utilize root cause analysis, preventative and corrective action to reduce/eliminate non-conformances.
  • Exemplifying a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN.
  • Participates in activities within a global technical community and has an understanding of the interface with broader business functions within GKN.
  • Works directly with engineering to assist in the development of machine and or tank set-up programming.
  • Identifies and evaluates patterns. Prior to removal of material determines method to remove material to meet customer specification.
  • Loads and unloads etch fixtures operating forklift.
  • Checks all work to assure that quality standards are maintained and has adhered to all specifications and procedures involving internal and customer practices.
  • Records operating parameters accurately and legibly in parts manufacturing notebook, routing sheets, resident paper or department documentation or terminals.
  • Maintain a clean work environment in full compliance with company standards, customer and government regulations.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a business culture, which supports the Company's overall business objectives and goals.
  • Ensure the company's commitment to maintain a safe workplace and to protect the environment through the establishment and support of Company policy.
  • Fully comply with the 'GKN Aerospace, Inc. Policy Statement on Contracting with the United States Government' in all areas of responsibility.
  • Perform daily preventative maintenance of equipment in adherence with a predefined schedule.
  • Performs other duties, tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
