About The Position

As a member of the Varsity Kansas City Yearbook team, the MACHINE OPERATOR CANDIDATES will be responsible for assisting in basic YEARBOOK PRODUCTION.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Previous experience operating industrial or production equipment preferred, but not required; on-the-job training may be provided.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal work instructions.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn machine setup, operation, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull materials typically weighing up to 40–50 pounds, with or without assistance.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to inspect printed materials for defects such as misalignment, color variation, or binding issues.
  • Basic math skills for measuring, counting, and recording production data.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Willingness to work scheduled shifts, including overtime during peak production periods.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented manufacturing environment.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor printing and finishing equipment used in the production of yearbooks, ensuring consistent quality and adherence to production specifications.
  • Set up machines according to job tickets, including paper type, trim size, cover stock, and binding method.
  • Load paper, covers, ink, glue, and other materials; adjust machine settings for alignment, color registration, and binding accuracy.
  • Perform routine quality checks throughout production to ensure pages are properly printed, collated, trimmed, and bound.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve minor mechanical or operational issues to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct routine maintenance such as cleaning, lubrication, and part replacement according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Follow safety procedures and lockout/tagout protocols while operating machinery.
  • Maintain accurate production records, including quantities produced, waste, and downtime.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, prepress, and quality teams to meet production deadlines.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with workplace safety standards.
