About The Position

The Boeing Company is seeking a motivated collaborative Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer to join our Composite Materials and Nondestructive Evaluation Team in Mesa, Arizona. We are looking for a broad range of experience including Associate, Mid-Level, or Senior NDE Engineers. Our Materials and Processes Technologies (M&PT) Department of Boeing Mesa, Arizona is seeking a high-performing associate, experienced or senior Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Engineer to join our team. The NDE Engineer will work independently as well as in teams and will apply knowledge of materials and processes in various engineering and manufacturing disciplines. This engineer will provide technical support for non-destructive inspection of various composites and metals structures in support of a variety of fixed wing, rotorcraft and proprietary program platforms. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient production of our world-class aerospace products, including advanced platforms for our Air Proprietary programs. Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • Bachelor's degree and 2+ years' experience or a Master's degree (Level 2)
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years' experience or Master's and 3+ years (Level 3)
  • Bachelor's degree and 9+ years' experience or Master's and 7+ years (Level 4)
  • 3+ years of experience working in Nondestructive Evaluation

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to convey technical and conceptual material to individuals at all levels within and outside of organization
  • Functional knowledge of instruments, systems, and software used for ultrasonic inspection of composites using manual or automated pulse echo, through transmission, pitch-catch, and phased array techniques
  • Functional knowledge of instruments, systems, and software used for magnetic particle, penetrant and eddy current inspection
  • Functional knowledge of instruments, systems, and software used for radiographical inspection
  • Knowledge of reference standard development and fabrication
  • Experience with robotics, 3D modeling, 3D printing, Computed Tomography (CT), and/or Ultrasonic Phased Array
  • Experience working in an engineering or scientific lab
  • Experienced reading drawings and using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Assists with or defines requirements for tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes used in the engineering design, manufacture and/or maintenance of products
  • Drafts or produces engineering specifications and other documents to manage the deployment of tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes
  • Interface across multiple engineering teams to align on inspection requirements and capabilities, inspection feasibility, design for inspection, inspection method selection, and interpretation and evaluation of data
  • Assists with certification and qualification of NDE equipment
  • Supports NDE specialists with development, qualification and deployment of new inspection processes (gauge R&R, PODs) including standardization, documentation and training
  • Develops and maintains proficiency in NDE Methods relevant to their role (eg Ultrasonics, Radiography, Eddy Currents, Magnetic Particle, Liquid Penetrant)
  • Supports root cause and corrective action of NDT related MRB to eliminate repetitive rework and continuously improve existing techniques balancing technical product, cost, and schedule
  • Supports and assess NDT evaluation technologies in support of new and existing programs and improve manufacturing process inspection using NDT methods
  • Compiles reports to document activities such as evaluations, results, interpretations and new procedures
  • Develops computer and production systems to satisfy user requirements
  • Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements
  • Works with the direction/mentorship of Principal/Senior Nondestructive Evaluation engineers to develop, certify, qualify, and implement Nondestructive Evaluation technologies across the enterprise
  • Maintains compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations
  • Promotes standardization across business activities
  • Implements corrective and preventive actions
  • Designs, develops and qualifies computer and production systems to satisfy user requirements
  • Leads production of specifications and other documents to manage the deployment of tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes
  • Defines and leads certification and qualification efforts of NDE equipment
  • Leads development, qualification and deployment of new inspection processes (gauge R&R, PODs) including standardization, documentation and training

  • Leads NDT evaluation and integration of technologies in support of new and existing programs and improve manufacturing process inspection using NDT methods
  • Leads test and audit programs to qualify suppliers to applicable requirements
  • Serves as the Lab Lead for the NDE Engineering lab, responsible for functions involving Safety, Metrology, Capital, etc.
  • Mentors early career engineers in the development, certification, qualification, and implementation of Nondestructive Evaluation technology across the enterprise
  • Leads others and work statement, assists in defining strategies and/or provides consultation
