About The Position

The Licensed Vocational Nurse supports the work of the Registered Nurse to meet the needs of patients in order to provide safe, efficient, timely and excellent high quality care. The role of the LVN will assist the RN in the care of a group of patients assigned to the RN. The management of other aspects of care may be assigned to LVNs provided the RN oversees the LVN's provision of care. They are not, under any circumstances, to be solely responsible for the care of a patient.

Requirements

  • High school diploma /GED.
  • Vocational Nursing Degree.
  • Two (2) years of LVN experience required. ED or Urgent Care Preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Current California State Licensed Vocation Nurse license
  • Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
  • Service Orientation - actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Critical Thinking - using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Responsibilities

  • Team huddle with the RN and CUS for a work plan for the day
  • Review assigned patient charts for history and medications needed.
  • Review most recent orders.
  • Review and administer medications for assigned patients some of whom needing Vital Signs taken prior to medication administration.
  • Administer medications by hypodermic injection.
  • Note insulin administration needs and respective double verification policy.
  • Obtain finger prick blood samples for blood sugar verification provided competency is verified
  • Perform IV started as needed provided competency has been verified.
  • Conduct IV rounds checking for IV infiltration, replacement of IV bags, IV tubing changes, or IV pump alarms.
  • Spiking and hanging of new IV bags after RN verification
  • Start or superimpose (piggyback) intravenous fluids (includes solutions of electrolytes, nutrients, vitamins, blood and blood products) via a primary or secondary infusion lines.
  • Administer skin tests.
  • Ask the patient a screening question about pain if they have any pain (Yes/No) additional assessment needs to be done by the RN.
  • Answer patient call signals, signal lights, bells, or intercom systems to determine patients' needs.
  • Turn or reposition bedridden patients.
  • Provide physical support to assist patients to perform daily living activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, using the toilet, and standing, walking, or exercising.
  • Review patients' dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences to ensure patient receives appropriate diet.
  • Measure and record food and liquid intake or urinary and fecal output, reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
  • Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration rate, as directed by medical or nursing staff.
  • Gather information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities.
  • Observe patients to detect symptoms that may require medical attention, such as bruises, open wounds, cognition, abnormal vital signs, and any signs of distress or blood in urine.
  • Document or otherwise report observations of patient behavior, complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses.
  • Assure patients take their oral medications prior to leaving the patient's room.
  • Remind patients to take nutritional supplements.
  • Comply with the hospital's mission and values.
  • Take an active role in the importance of rounding.
  • Other duties, within scope, as assigned.
