About The Position

Under direct supervision of an RN or provider performs routine patient care, excluding administration of IV medications and venipuncture, following established policies, procedures and standards; follows Quality of Service Standards; follows Universal Precautions.

Requirements

  • Ability to work effectively with the public.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Consistently demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary to provide superior and culturally sensitive service.
  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Vocational Nurse License (California).
  • Basic Life Support certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nursing care functions such as vital signs, removal and/or application of dressings for assessment by licensed provider.
  • Clean or irrigate wounds after provider's assessment and instructions.
  • Shave and prepare skin, perform ear washes, NG insertion & lavage, urinary catheter insertion & irrigation.
  • Reinforce standardized self-care procedures as directed by licensed provider.
  • Recognize and respond to acute emergency situations following established procedures.
  • Orient patients to system policies and practices.
  • Provide appropriate instruction sheets based upon provider direction and review them with patients.
  • Administer medications, excluding IV medications, as ordered by provider.
  • Observe and document patients' responses to medications and therapy.
  • Perform tuberculin, coccidioidin and histoplasmin skin tests as part of a tuberculosis control program.
  • Perform immunizations based upon written protocols.
  • Complete necessary arrangements or organize treatment rooms prior to surgical and/or examination procedures.
  • Assist licensed provider with patient examinations and treatments by positioning, restraining patients, and assisting as directed.
  • Provide assistance in treatment rooms during minor surgical procedures and/or various diagnostic examinations.
  • Ensure the safety of patients during procedures.
  • Prepare and transport items such as medical equipment and laboratory specimens.
  • Clean and disinfect instruments/equipment according to standardized procedures.
  • Report incidents of failure to follow procedures to Department Administrator or designee.
  • Maintain departmental files, performing duties such as pulling files and assembling forms prior to appointments.
  • Initiate and/or complete diagnostic test forms per provider order, telephone prescriptions to pharmacies, and relay medical information.
  • Chart in patients' medical records as indicated.
  • Perform lab tests including urine dip-tests, acetone tests, hemoccult tests, tests to determine pH, protein, PKU.
  • Perform hearing and vision tests, glaucoma tests, and visual acuities.
  • Collect, by non-invasive and invasive techniques, and preserve specimens for testing, including urine, sputum, and stool.
  • Participate in Department Quality Assurance activities.
  • Perform other duties as required, such as checking patients' medical records for incomplete data and relaying messages to staff personnel.
