LVMPD internships are unpaid volunteer positions offered only to current college students, who must perform the internship in return for college credits toward graduation. Internships are generally performed on a part-time basis, for instance, 20 hours per week, within one semester. No free housing is offered, regardless of whether the successful candidate is an out-of-state student. The following LVMPD units have accepted interns in the past: Crime Scene Investigations, Cold Cases, Missing Persons, Victim Services Unit, Recruiting, Forensic Laboratory, Emergency Management, and Counter Terrorism. However, actual availability of internships in the different LVMPD sections varies by semester based on mentor availability. Interns have no law enforcement power and are students currently in an advanced stage of their college studies desiring to pursue a career in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field upon college graduation. Typically assigned a mentor, interns acquire the necessary knowledge and skills while providing non-commissioned, non-hazardous support and/or research services to the LVMPD unit assigned.
