About The Position

The School Crossing Guard/Lunch Monitor assists students to safely cross streets and roads before and after school. Duties include exposure to dirt, dust, and extreme seasonal temperatures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must have a knowledge of traffic regulations and acceptable street crossing procedures
  • Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to exhibit mature judgment
  • Ability to verbally communicate to students in English and Spanish
  • Must be an energetic, highly ethical and possess good emotional and physical health
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

Responsibilities

  • Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets
  • Hold stop sign stopping motorist so that children may cross street safely
  • Assist students as needed to cross intersections on the way to and from school
  • Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary
  • Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at street and railroad crossings, and construction sites.
  • Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.
  • Report unsafe behavior of children to school officials.
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to appropriate authorities
  • Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals.
  • Learn the location and purpose of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areas.
  • Stop speeding vehicles to warn drivers of traffic laws.
  • Set up school crossing signs and markers at designated points
  • Complete district inservice training program before assuming responsibility for the crosswalk
  • Establish and maintain good student conduct at the crosswalk
  • Assure that students walk in the crosswalk
  • Be on duty at the designated times to promote timely routines for students
  • Report unsafe student behavior in or near the crosswalk to the principals
  • Participate in district sponsored professional development workshops/inservices, attend on-going training classes as directed, and read professional publications for continued professional development
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion when working with all district personnel records and/or information
  • Support and follow the rules, regulations and policies set by the School Board, the assigned school and the District
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board, the Principal or his/her designee.
