About The Position

The Yard Manager is responsible for supervising all activities of the yard and warehouse operations at their location, including oversight of yard personnel, inventory, and equipment. The Yard Manager is expected to ensure an excellent experience for customers, maintaining a culture of safety, exhibiting excellent product knowledge, and maximizing the efficient operation of the yard with regard to the receipt, stocking and delivery of inventory. As this is a supervisory position, the individual will be responsible to make sure that their location meets company expectations related to cleanliness, proper storage of product, safe operations and equipment handling, timely unloading and loading of vehicles and delivery operations, along with performing daily equipment inspections and routine equipment maintenance. In addition, the Yard Manager will collaborate closely with their respective General Manager to assist in mentoring and training team members to understand and perform all functions associated with the yard operations as well as managing team member training, labor hours, and other required reporting with respect to the receipt and delivery of inventory. The direct supervisor of a Yard Manager is the location General Manager.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Yard Manager / Supervisor with a lumber company or equivalent experience in similar field.
  • An acceptable driving record, valid state issued driver's license (Missouri locations require a Class E license).
  • Administrative skills including assigning work assignments, discipline, evaluating, planning, supervision, and training.
  • Knowledge of building materials, applications, related equipment, and/or construction industry is required.
  • Forklift experience preferred in many of the tasks required to be performed. Will train the right candidate.
  • Follow safety expectations set by company safety policies consistent with the storage, handling, and transport of materials.
  • Regular, reliable, dependable attendance.
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written) when dealing with vendors, customers, management, and team members.
  • Knowledge of basic math, counting and estimating.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Ability to provide professional customer service and work in a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the oversight of all incoming inventory as well as the proper storage of inventory in lumberyard and warehouses by yard personnel.
  • Directs yard personnel in loading, unloading and movement of inventory in the yard utilizing fork trucks and other equipment.
  • Accurately build loads and prepare materials for delivery before delivery takes place.
  • Inspects loading operations for outgoing delivery to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, load limits and safety regulations; prepares and reconciles bills of lading and packing slips.
  • Load materials into customers' vehicles or on to company delivery vehicles, after validating type and quantity based on the record of the transaction from the company's point-of-sale system.
  • Evaluate returned merchandise from customers or professional contractors for proper disposition (resale, salvage, etc.).
  • Greet and assist customers or professional contractors in a friendly manner upon entry into the lumberyard.
  • Responsible for ensuring the inventory in the yard area and warehouses are maintained, organized, and stocked in accordance with Company standards.
  • Provides on-the-job training to new yard employees including product knowledge of inventory stored in yard and warehouse and housekeeping and safety procedures.
  • Complete required inspections and forms to comply with the Company's Fleet Maintenance Program.
  • Understands and observes all safety procedures and practices to prevent injury to self or co-workers; attends periodic safety meetings as required.
  • Actively engages in increasing knowledge of sales techniques and developing product and industry knowledge through attending company training programs.
  • Perform any other assigned job duties, responsibilities or tasks as requested by the General Manager.
