About The Position

We serve nearly 30,000 year-round residents and a vibrant seasonal population by providing essential services that support and protect the people, economy, and environment of the beautiful Door Peninsula. Within the County organization, the Transportation Department provides public transit services that help residents access work, school, medical care, shopping, and other essential destinations. The department works to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable transportation options for those who may otherwise face mobility challenges. Door County Connect – Public Transit offers shared-ride services throughout much of the county, including Door 2 Door Rides (D2D) and local transit within Sturgeon Bay and nearby areas. The department also partners with Door-Tran and the County Veterans Service Office to support no-cost medical transportation for veterans. Through these services, the Transportation Department helps keep the community connected. To continue this important work, we are seeking a candidate who will perform the responsibilities outlined in the job summary and contribute to our efforts in serving the community. Job Summary The Bus Driver ensures the safe, courteous, and timely transport of older adults, individuals with disabilities, and other eligible community members using County-owned vehicles. This field-based role supports essential transportation services, vehicle maintenance coordination, and accurate trip documentation in alignment with departmental policies and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of driving experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to physically assist passengers and perform daily vehicle safety checks.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience operating a bus or similar transport service vehicle.
  • CPR certification and basic first aid knowledge.
  • Familiarity with transportation coordination for special populations (e.g., elderly or disabled riders).

Responsibilities

  • Operates County vehicles in a safe, efficient, and lawful manner while assisting passengers with boarding, seating, and exiting; conducts daily inspections and ensures vehicles meet all safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Schedules and completes routine and emergency vehicle maintenance, coordinating with service providers to ensure continued operability and compliance with inspection requirements.
  • Prepares vehicles and logistical materials, as needed, for scheduled veteran transport to VA-approved medical appointments.
  • Records and maintains accurate documentation of trip details, including mileage, demographics, fare collections, and donations, as required for reporting and audits.
  • Coordinates pre-scheduled and on-demand ride services, using available tools and judgment to optimize routes and timing.
  • Communicates reliably and professionally in both verbal and written formats to relay service information or incident reports to staff and supervisors.
  • Supports office operations by answering phones, greeting clients, and assisting with transportation-related inquiries as availability permits.
  • Attends departmental meetings and participates in required training, including emergency preparedness protocols per the County’s Emergency Management Plan.
