Additive Manufacturing Research & Development The Savannah River National Laboratory’s Advanced Manufacturing & Design Group seeks to fill several technical intern positions to support innovative research and development in the area of additive manufacturing. Responsibilities The successful candidates would provide research support to the polymer and/or metal Additive Manufacturing Team on one or more of these key projects: Design tooling and molds, 3D print the molds using multiple AM machines (e.g., vat photopolymerization, extrusion, powder bed fusion, etc.), use secondary manufacturing technique (e.g., injection molding), and evaluate the quality and performance of both printed tool/mold and fabricated final part. Design and build a research and development scale laser powder bed fusion system suitable for use as a testbed for screening novel materials and proving on machine inspection technologies prior to costly scale up. Use statistical design of experiments to map the effects of 3D printing composite polymers by various AM techniques. Characterize 3D printed specimens of various refractory metal alloys, including W-Re, W, Ta, and Ta-W to build on the efforts of refractory metal AM research performed by SRNL researchers The candidates will be expected to: Work with assigned mentor and Additive Manufacturing Team members to understand work processes and scope of project; Perform work safely using the Safe Conduct of Research Principles; Provide accurate, detailed, and timely written updates and reports associated with work scope.
