About The Position

The UW Department of Biology has an exciting opportunity for a Lab Services Manager in its Life Sciences Building. The Life Sciences Building (part of the Life Sciences Complex that includes a modern Greenhouse) is a state-of-the-art environment for modern-age research and teaching at the UW, enabling us to prepare the next generation of scientists and industry leaders while catalyzing boundless scientific enterprise. Position Purpose This position provides management and oversight of the UW Biology Department’s shared lab spaces, core research facilities, and shared equipment recharge center in order to meet the research and instructional needs of approximately 100 faculty and postdoctoral fellows, 100 staff, and approximately 100 graduate students in faculty labs. This is a position that will involve high interaction with all levels of Department personnel. This position will have oversight and coordination of shared spaces, core facility operations (including growth chamber assignment), and departmental policies and procedures regarding lab operations in LSB, Hitchcock Hall, PAA, and the Biology Greenhouse. The ideal candidate for this position is able to complete a wide range of diverse tasks using administrative, computer, electrical/electronic, mechanical and safety skills with minimal supervision. Success requires the ability to work independently as well as a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse population of personnel, including faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, facilities services staff, external contractors and subcontractors, and external equipment vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a natural science field such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or related field, OR equivalent education/experience.
  • Minimum related work experience of one or less years in a laboratory setting.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
  • Demonstrated excellence in on the job problem solving ability and time management skills.
  • Computer proficiency and demonstrated ability to learn specialized programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Manage media room operations.
  • Supervise lab tech and media room student employees.
  • Directly perform and coordinate facility operations, maintenance, and repairs in LSB, Hitchcock Hall, PAA, and the Biology Greenhouse.
  • Program, calibrate, and monitor the Argus automation climate control systems used in the greenhouse and growth chambers.
  • Run environmental control system reports, maintain current software configurations and contact databases, and troubleshoot programming and configuration issues to ensure uninterrupted facility operations.
  • Monitor alarms and be on 24/7 emergency call list for assigned facilities.
  • Provide training and oversight in the safe use of shared departmental equipment such as growth chambers, centrifuges, autoclaves, water purification systems, etc.
  • Order supplies for growth chambers, grow rooms, and shared equipment; acquire other tools, equipment, and materials as needed.
  • Assist in diagnosing and repairing specialty greenhouse systems, shared laboratory equipment, and facility-related issues; coordinate service and maintenance with manufacturers, external vendors, and UW Facilities.
  • Liaise with UW Facilities, EH&S, and external vendors for facility projects, building maintenance, and compliance.
  • Provide oversight and management of shared laboratory spaces and chemical rooms.
  • Ensure compliance with various safety rules and procedures.
  • Prepare, post and distribute safety guidelines to meet UW and State of Washington requirements and inform the Biology community.
  • Keep required safety documentation up to date (e.g. FSEP) and administer systems for compilation of safety information (e.g. online SOP clearinghouse, lab safety manuals, etc.).
  • Coordinate lab safety surveys, fire safety surveys, etc. and facilitate correction of issues cited with PIs and UW Facilities.
  • Assist with diagnosis and repair of general equipment and research facility problems, coordinate service and maintenance with manufacturers, outside vendors and UW Facilities.
  • Support faculty, staff, and students in research facility-related needs, including new faculty onboarding and research space setup.
  • Respond to facility and safety emergencies across all assigned research buildings, including urgent environmental climate or and infrastructure issues.
  • Assist with preparation of paperwork and removal of surplus furniture and equipment.
  • Supervisory Responsible for supervising 1 FTE Laboratory Technician.
