Poplar Springs Hospital, a 183 bed acute care and residential facility, is located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond and 50 minutes north of North Carolina. Requirements

  • Licensed to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Must have graduated from an approved school of practical nursing
  • Education, experience and/or training in working with patient population of unit of assignment is required either prior to employment or during an initial employment period.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia Interdepartmental Regulation of Children’s Residential Facilities. (22VAC42-11-380, pg. 43)
  • Must have patience, tact, and a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm.
  • Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Basic clerical skills, basic experience with office equipment (telephone, copy machine, fax, etc.)
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to problem solve and accept feedback when circumstances warrant such actions.
  • Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.

Responsibilities

  • Administer medications before breakfast and/or school.
  • Cover the Solarium while Lead Tech does room checks/perform room checks.
  • Assist with transitioning Residents to and from school or activities. (Cover gate if necessary)
  • Remain on the unit with RN if Residents refuse school or are sick.
  • Float in school hallways and respond to complaints of illness or pain. Report findings to the RN.
  • Stays on the unit to cover while RN goes to Treatment Team Meetings.
  • Transcribe orders from medical Dr. and Psychiatrist if RN requires assistance.
  • Assist with making appointments for psychological testing and consult request.
  • Relieves MHTs for breaks.
  • Assist with obtaining vitals on weekends and reports findings to RN and medical Dr if necessary.
  • Assist with informing patients and families about new medications and obtaining consents for new medications.
  • Update Treatment Plans and problem sheets as needed.
  • Ensures that medications are re-ordered in a timely manner before they run out.
  • Assist RN with admissions when needed. (Searches and body checks, ordering medications, obtaining consents)
  • Assist with management of behaviors as well as physical restraints if necessary.
  • Assist with HPRs and informing guardians of behavioral issues. Refer guardians to RN or Supervisor if requested.
