About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, the T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurses provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse (RN) or other assigned supervisor and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor in meeting the needs of the patient/family. Duties of a T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurse in our Emergency Department may include the following but are not limited to: Collects data through observation and communicates information to assist the RN and/or provider in patient assessment and care planning. Participates as a member of the health care team and accepts delegation from the RN/assigned supervisor and provider in meeting needs of the patient/family. Delivers care in accordance with the patient care plan, policies and procedures of the organization and principles of relationship-based care. Possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and participates on committees or projects. Plans and manages patient care according to each patient's needs. Interviews patients and records their medical history and physical condition. Obtains patient vital signs, including pulse, blood pressure, temperature, and respiration. Provides routine care for patients. Observes patients' health. Reviews medical charts. Accompanies patients to their rooms. Assists physicians and registered nurses. Communicates with patients and their families. Performs standard diagnostic procedures including EKG, phlebotomy, venipuncture, PFT, and Doppler. Prepares specimens for lab courier. Administers medications. Provides wound care. Prepares and administers injections and/or enemas. Assists with patient comfort. Monitors catheters. Working Conditions: Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. This position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.

Requirements

  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
  • As part of the onboarding process, we require a copy of your current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Nice To Haves

  • Acute care, phlebotomy, EKG, and/or IV experience.
