Job Summary: Provides care in the ambulatory setting directed toward meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Works in the same-day surgery and PACU areas. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Is compatible and supportive, a team player. Communication on behalf of the patient reflects the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital as well as the focus statement of the department. Maintains competencies and licensures required for the department and hospital. Duties and Responsibilities: Gives the patient care reflecting flexibility in rules and regulations, as indicated by individual patient needs. Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases and surgical conditions, the care required, and good judgment. Demonstrates knowledge in all areas of care specific to the Outpatient Surgery Department, i.e., GI, conscious sedation, and PACU. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Organizes and manages nursing activities to reflect due consideration for patients’ needs and the needs of the department and staff. Flexibility is maintained. Demonstrates knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and the patient’s clinical condition. Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Demonstrates ability to perform a head-to-toe preoperative assessment on all patients and reassessment as needed postoperatively. This includes the pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and minimizes the likelihood of medical or healthcare errors. Demonstrates ability to formulate and individualize plan of care as indicated and evaluates for effectiveness. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified patient learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate, from pre-op to discharge. Provides the patient with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently. Identifies physical symptoms and changes; takes appropriate action on time. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring; can identify dysrhythmias. Communicates appropriately and clearly to the charge nurse, co-workers, and physicians. Professional Requirements: Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times. Excellent attendance record. Wears appropriate clothing for job functions. Wears an ID badge. Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, administration, and staff. Represents the organization positively and professionally in the community.
