About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Surgery provides direct perioperative and intraoperative care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN supports the surgical team by preparing surgical instruments and supplies, assisting with procedures, maintaining a sterile environment, and ensuring patient safety throughout surgical interventions. This role is integral to the success of the surgical unit and demands technical proficiency, strong communication, and a commitment to high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and aseptic techniques
  • Ability to remain calm and organized under pressure
  • Basic computer and documentation skills
  • Strong attention to detail and safety compliance
  • Good physical stamina to stand for extended periods and assist with patient transfer
  • Clear verbal communication and respectful interaction with the surgical team and patients
  • Demonstrated ability to follow established hospital protocols and support quality improvement initiatives
  • Graduate of an accredited practical/vocational nursing program
  • Current LPN license in state of practice or Compact State License (if applicable)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required upon hire)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – within time frame specified in facility policy
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – within time frame specified in facility policy
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – within time frame specified in facility policy
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or Handle with Care– within time frame specified in facility policy
  • IV Therapy Certification Course – within time frame specified in facility policy

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of six months’ experience in an acute care or surgical setting

Responsibilities

  • Assist surgeons and RNs during operative procedures by handing instruments and maintaining aseptic technique
  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field and ensure equipment functionality
  • Account for surgical instruments and sponges before, during, and after procedures
  • Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the surgical team
  • Prepare patients for surgery and assist with preoperative and postoperative care
  • Assist with documentation of patient information and procedures
  • Decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
  • Handle surgical specimens for delivery to pathology
  • Adhere to infection control and patient safety standards
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operation of the surgical unit
