About The Position

The Charge Nurse is responsible for total resident care of a designated group of residents as assigned by the Supervisor. This role involves the application of nursing principles in initiating, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating resident care plans. The Charge Nurse must exercise sound judgment to recognize and take appropriate action regarding significant changes in residents' conditions. The position requires full control over subordinate personnel within the assigned area, ensuring that duties are delegated and carried out safely and efficiently. The Charge Nurse works under the direction of the Director of Nursing or the Supervisor, depending on the shift.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing and holding a current Michigan nursing license.
  • Experience in Medical-Surgical nursing is desirable.
  • Evidence of good physical and mental health.
  • Qualities of leadership and a sincere desire to work in geriatrics and with people with chronic diseases.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of current nursing practices in long-term medicine.
  • Ability to maintain the care and use of supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care of the designated resident area by assisting in planning, directing, and coordinating nursing care.
  • Initiate and update resident care plans as needed.
  • Perform various direct resident care duties, including making periodic resident rounds and assisting the physician with examinations.
  • Administer medications and treatments prescribed by the attending physician.
  • Conduct health teaching for residents and families.
  • Accurate charting and reporting of the condition and care of residents.
  • Supervise nursing personnel and keep them informed regarding changes.
  • Instruct nursing personnel in proper nursing techniques and equipment utilization.
  • Assist with the orientation of new employees.
  • Establish priorities in meeting the needs of residents, visitors, staff, and the public.
  • Utilize problem-solving techniques to individualize resident care planning.
  • Respond appropriately to environmental and safety hazards.
