About The Position

The LPN Extern position is designed to provide practical, hands-on clinical experience to individuals pursuing licensure as Licensed Practical Nurses. This role serves as a critical bridge between academic learning and professional nursing practice, allowing externs to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings under supervision. The primary goal is to develop clinical competencies, enhance patient care skills, and foster professional growth within a supportive environment. Externs will collaborate closely with registered nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective care to patients. Ultimately, this role prepares candidates for successful transition into fully licensed practical nursing positions by building confidence, clinical judgment, and technical proficiency.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training program.
  • Completion of foundational nursing coursework including anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening as required by the healthcare facility.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to patient confidentiality and ethical care.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting such as a volunteer or aide role.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Additional certifications such as CPR or First Aid.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Bilingual language skills to support diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist nursing staff with patient care activities including vital signs monitoring, hygiene assistance, and mobility support.
  • Observe and document patient conditions and report any changes to supervising nurses promptly.
  • Participate in the administration of medications and treatments as delegated and under supervision.
  • Support the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.
  • Engage in learning opportunities such as case discussions, skill demonstrations, and feedback sessions to enhance clinical knowledge.
