Cleveland Clinic's Emergency Department (ED) has a 23-hour Observation Unit that provides patients with additional time for evaluation and treatment. Patients may be referred to the observation unit if their condition requires more time than the ED can provide, or if their condition is not clear after an ED visit. During observation, patients may receive additional blood tests, X-rays, consultations with specialists, and treatment. After 24 hours, doctors will re-examine the patient to determine if they need further treatment or can go home. Patients may be discharged home or admitted to the hospital based on their progress.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited Practical or Vocational Nursing Program.
• Current Ohio license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.
• If in an ED, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through AHA or American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department.
• If in an ED, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through AHA or American Red Cross upon hire or within one year of beginning work in the Emergency Department.

Nice To Haves

• One year of patient care experience.

Responsibilities

• Collect, document and report patient data and observations.
• Implement care plans as directed by an RN and contribute to care plan revisions.
• Administer medications and/or treatments authorized by a provider and observe patients for adverse reactions.
• Perform routine laboratory tests.
• Educate patients and family members.
