About The Position

The Medical Assistant position at Advocate Health involves adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency based on the area of specialty when providing patient care. Responsibilities include performing rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings. The role also involves assisting providers with procedures, performing lab-related duties, and administering medications and vaccines safely. The position requires effective communication, teamwork, and maintaining a clean work environment. Knowledge of age-specific care is essential, as well as the ability to assess and interpret patient data.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent military training.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding and navigation within a windows operating system.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or equivalent.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) certification may be required within 1 year in select areas.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice and follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings.
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, and appointment scheduling.
  • Cross trained to perform duties relevant to specialty or clinic practice.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication and teamwork.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
