Come be a part of Mecklenburg County’s Public Health department’s vision to “assure the health and safety of our diverse and changing community today and for future generations.” This is a Full-Time permanent 10-month position, meaning you will be working for 10 months of the year, August to June, and be off on a summer break for eight (8) weeks over the summer. During this time, you will not be receiving pay, but your benefits do continue. During the 10 months that you are working, you will be paying a prorated amount to cover the cost of your benefits during the summer months that you are not working. The position performs a variety of health care related services within a school setting and assists with clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. This 10 month position, under direct supervision, is responsible for providing basic nursing care in assigned area. All Licensed Practical Nurses employed by the Mecklenburg County Health Department, regardless of official title or classification, may provide nursing services during urgent and/or emergent public health events. These services include, but are not limited to, administration of immunizations for various ages and groups, mass medication distribution, and provision of health services in shelter environments.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of healthcare experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited LPN program.
  • Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire.
  • Maintenance of Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) certification is required.
  • May require valid NC or SC driver's license.
  • May require the ability to obtain and maintain a Mecklenburg County Vehicle Operator's Permit (COP).
  • Annual Mecklenburg County Human Resource background screening required.
  • Knowledge of Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, statutes, rules, and regulations NC Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology.

  • Measles, Mumps, & Rubella (MMR) vaccine documentation or titer information.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox or VZV) vaccine documentation or titer information.
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, & pertussis (Tdap) vaccination documentation.
  • Td/Tdap booster every 10 years after Tdap.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine information or titer.
  • Influenza vaccination (FLU).
  • Tuberculosis (TB) skin testing, or Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) documentation.
  • If history of a positive skin test or IGRA in the past, a TB evaluation is required if individual is positive.
  • Must produce copies of specific documentation for TB if tested positive (test result reading, follow-up documentation, chest x-ray, medication card or documentation).

Responsibilities

  • Document patient history using structured, written guidelines, policies, and forms.
  • Assist patients with the completion of self-histories or self-assessment questionnaires.
  • Administer medication/immunizations when an initial assessment (care planning) has been completed by the RN or standards of care and policy dictate that an initial assessment is not required.
  • Make referrals and/or follow up with patients to ensure they make and keep referral appointments based on policies, procedures, and standing orders.
  • Contact or follow up with providers for information on patients and their care.
  • Document information on the appropriate paper or electronic client record, nursing care plan, or other documents.
  • Track immunizations, follows up, and enter data into North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR).
  • Obtain heights, weights, vital signs, hearing and vision screening, and lab specimens when the procedure falls within LPN legal scope of practice as ordered by providers or Standing Orders.
  • Assist medical personnel during clinical exams and procedures.
  • Ensure that clinics are stocked and supplied with materials; sets up equipment and supplies.
  • Provide educational materials and counseling on communicable disease, diet and nutrition, medication, and general health care based on teaching plan/protocol assigned by the RN.
  • Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
