The Lead Academic Teacher for the LOOP Program is responsible for managing and overseeing the Academic LOOP program and its staff. This role involves providing quality academic instruction tailored to meet the diverse needs of students attending the LOOP programs. The program operates from August to May, with academic sessions held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for one hour. The position requires a commitment of 5 hours per week, with varying hours based on LOOP site dismissal times.

  • Plan, coordinate, implement and schedule academic summer school curriculum
  • Teach during academic sessions the required curriculum and effectively maintain and monitor ongoing student progress
  • Schedule academic support staff
  • Manage the academic program staff
  • Schedule, arrange, and facilitate meetings with academic support staff, site coordinator, and school principal
  • Serve as liaison between site coordinator, school principal, building school day staff, and LOOP academic staff
  • Collect, review for accuracy, and submit bi-weekly academic support staff timesheets to Office of Extended Learning
  • Provide students with effective instruction, modeling, and interventions in various behavioral areas
  • Develop detailed and concise lesson plans for each subject area; plan and provide appropriate educational supplemental activities to meet both group and individual needs of all children within the classroom
  • Utilize best classroom management practices to create a conducive learning environment
  • Responsible for student academic progress report follow-through
  • Attend mandatory scheduled monthly Lead Teacher meetings and trainings
  • Attend professional development opportunities as required and/or offered
  • Report absences to OEL Director and Academic Staff in advance (if known)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher education
  • Michigan teaching certificate required
  • Valid Michigan Health License (Social Worker, Physical Therapist, Speech and Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist)
  • Teaching or tutoring experience in an urban setting
  • Complete LARA (PA 116) mandated requirements including Comprehensive Childcare Background Check (CCBC)
  • Obtain CCBC eligibility to work in a licensed childcare facility
  • Complete MiRegistry Health and Safety Online Modules A, B, C and Transportation or annual Health and Safety Refresher Course
  • Obtain First Aid Certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation by LARA approved agencies
  • Display physical, social, mental, and emotional soundness to execute the duties of the job
  • Interact positively with co-workers, administration, students, parents, and the community
  • Maintain and promote school district goals and objectives
  • Comply with state, federal and District policies, procedures, rules, and the union contract
  • Regular and on-time in-person attendance is required
  • Demonstrated understanding of current research on how children learn
  • Ability to motivate students to perform at their best
  • Ability to work in an economically, culturally, and racially diverse environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to differentiate instruction using a variety of styles
  • Ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload
