About The Position

This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and specialized equipment in support of various State agencies and universities. The position may involve operating a wide range of equipment—or focusing on specific types—depending on program needs. Supported program areas may include public transportation, grounds maintenance, juvenile transport, solid waste hauling, mail and cargo transport, forest fire response, reforestation operations, and hydrogeological drilling. The role may also include supervising temporary staff or court‑assigned workers. Employees in this position independently operate tractor‑trailer units and other specialized equipment while adhering to established safety standards, schedules, and regulations. Responsibilities include planning routes, conducting safety assessments, performing minor preventive maintenance, and participating in required safety inspections and drills.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.

  • Documented experience operating large vehicles, including tractor‑trailers, for extended periods under varied road, weather, traffic, and time‑of‑day conditions in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accepted practices, principles, methods, and procedures related to commercial transportation.
  • Ability to follow established safety standards, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to apply sound judgment when handling diverse transportation tasks and responding to unexpected conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and ensure accurate documentation related to transportation activities.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a tractor‑trailer and other specialized equipment safely and efficiently in varied road, weather, and traffic conditions.
  • Oversee and participate in loading, securing, transporting, and unloading materials while maintaining compliance with weight and cargo distribution guidelines.
  • Ensure the security of the vehicle and cargo, and verify delivery accuracy by reviewing delivery tickets and required documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and minor service tasks to ensure equipment remains in safe operating condition.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, customers, and other stakeholders while coordinating deliveries and operating warehouse or material‑handling equipment such as forklifts.
