About The Position

Logistics & Distribution Manager - Temp to Permanent hire Location: Near Green Bay, Wisconsin Position Type: Onsite A leading industrial paper and packaging manufacturer in Wisconsin is seeking a Logistics and Distribution Manager to join its team near Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin mill is part of a privately held paper and packaging manufacturing organization with international operations. The facility is the company's largest paper mill and produces high-quality recycled containerboard, natural kraft packaging, bag, and other specialty paper products. The site has a rich history of innovation and manufacturing dating back more than a century. Position Overview The Logistics and Distribution Manager will oversee a high-volume, 24/7 freight and warehousing operation handling approximately 120 truckloads daily (combined inbound and outbound). This role is responsible for leading a team of approximately 50 unionized hourly employees, ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant shipping and receiving processes. The manager will also oversee a team of 3 salaried (non-union) Transportation Planners responsible for sourcing, scheduling, and handling exceptions to inbound and outbound shipments. The role is also responsible for internal yard (drop & hook) operations as well as an offsite 3PL warehouse. The manager will drive operational excellence, foster positive labor relations, maintain service levels that meet or exceed customer expectations, and help minimize operational and freight costs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 10+ years of logistics or distribution management experience, preferably in a high-volume, 24/7 operation.
  • Proven experience managing unionized workforces.
  • Strong knowledge of freight operations, including shipping, receiving, and carrier management.
  • Proficiency with logistics software (ERP, WMS, TMS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Paper mill logistics experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, coaches, and manages the day-to-day operations of Transportation Planning, Shipping, Receiving, Inventory Control, Internal Trucking team, plus External Carriers.
  • Assures a safe working environment for all employees by leading and directing proactive safety efforts within areas of responsibility.
  • Champions and leads the daily execution of the Transportation Management Operating System.
  • Ensures compliance and fosters a continuous improvement mindset within the Transportation and Mill organization.
  • Researches, analyzes, and develops transportation planning strategies for all freight movements to obtain quality, high-service, and low-cost transportation services.
  • Serves as the key interface with other functional areas regarding Transportation, Shipping, and Trucking as it relates to service performance.
  • Identifies issues and coordinates problem resolution.
  • Plans long-term carrier capacity to meet company requirements for all outbound freight.
  • Participates in inbound carrier selection and coordinates carrier selection with appropriate facilities.
  • Negotiates carrier rates via contract or common carrier authority.
  • Monitors carrier service performance and coordinates solutions to carrier performance issues.
  • Assists in the development of the company's Freight and Operations Budget.
  • Sets direction of freight movements, warehouse management, and product flow for Finished Goods and Work in Process (WIP).
  • Manages warehousing of both finished goods and WIP inventories within the mill while maintaining high inventory accuracy.
  • Participates in labor/management policies and grievance processes.
  • Directs all departmental operations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Directs efforts to coordinate with production planning to maintain WIP at target levels in the correct products.
  • Defines, researches, and implements opportunities to enhance service.
  • Identifies, develops plans, and executes alternatives to reduce logistics costs.
  • Cultivates effective working relationships across departments and with external partners.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management.
  • Coordinate with procurement, production, and customer service teams to align logistics with business needs.
  • Manage relationships with carriers, vendors, and third-party logistics providers.
