The Locomotive Welder at Progress Rail Services Corp. is responsible for the fabrication, assembly, repair, inspection, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of locomotive components, parts, and structures. This role ensures that all work conforms to the specifications set forth by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the company, and customer requirements. The position requires a commitment to safety and compliance with all railroad rules and regulations, particularly those related to the protection of workers. The welder will perform various welding tasks, including single and multi-pass welds in all positions (vertical, flat, and overhead) on locomotive components, heavy plate, and sheet metal. The ability to work from drawings, weld procedure specifications, and operating procedures is essential, as is the proper utilization of welding equipment and tools such as welders, cutting torches, grinders, and overhead cranes. In addition to welding, the Locomotive Welder will analyze and correct faults related to inspection, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and installations of locomotive components. Participation in problem-solving and continuous improvement activities is expected, along with maintaining accurate written and computer records. The role may also involve rolling, bending, flanging, cutting, and shaping plates and other heavy parts using shop machinery. Keeping work areas clean and organized, taking care of all equipment and tools, and assisting in other repairs and maintenance as assigned by supervision are also key responsibilities. The position requires adherence to all safety policies and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Specific site-based duties may apply, and the welder will be expected to consult with the local team for additional responsibilities.
