The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG), a National Historic and Civil Engineering Landmark, is seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused Locomotive Engineer to operate our fleet of vintage steam and diesel locomotives. As a key member of our operations team, you will ensure the safe, efficient, and timely operation of passenger trains through the stunning, yet rugged San Juan Mountains, delivering an unforgettable experience to passengers while upholding the highest standards of railroad safety and heritage rail preservation.

  • Safely operate and control both vintage steam or diesel locomotives on assigned train, adhering to all operating rules, and schedules
  • Monitor and Maintain Equipment: Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of locomotives, monitor and record fuel levels, observe mechanical components to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Ensure Passenger Safety and Comfort: Maintain a professional yet approachable demeanor, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of passengers while adhering to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, Rules and company policies.
  • Collaborate with Crew: Work closely with firemen, conductors, brakemen, and other crew members to ensure smooth train operations and effective communication. This is a team atmosphere.
  • Troubleshoot and Respond to Issues: Diagnose and address mechanical or operational issues during runs, making real-time decisions to maintain safety and schedule adherence.
  • Uphold Historical Integrity: Operate and maintain locomotives in a manner consistent with the historical and cultural significance of the D&SNG, contributing to an authentic passenger experience.
  • Adhere to Safety Standards: Follow all safety protocols, including FRA regulations, company Operating and Safety Rules, General Orders and policies.
  • Assist with Training: Mentor and train junior engineers or firemen as needed, sharing expertise in steam locomotive operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating steam or diesel locomotives.
  • Minimum of 2 years of oil firing experience
  • GCOR familiar
  • Once hired, requirement to train and mark up as a fireman first
  • Pass a series of 3 progressive tests prior to marking up as an engineer.
  • In-depth understanding of steam locomotive mechanics, including boiler principles and functions, running and valve gear operation.
  • Train handling in mountainous terrain. Use of retainers and dynamic braking
  • Knowledge of the Durango to Silverton route, including its unique operational challenges (e.g., steep grades, tight curves, and challenging weather conditions).
  • Mechanical background with hands-on experience maintaining steam and diesel locomotives.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities and emotional maturity
  • A strong willingness and ability to learn.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and ongoing random, reasonable suspicion, and post accident drug tests, if applicable.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical
  • Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing, walking on uneven surfaces for up to 12 hours.
  • Working at high altitudes up to 9,300 feet
  • Exposed to all types of weather
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and peak tourist seasons.
  • While rare, occasional stays at away terminals may be required.
  • Previous experience on heritage or tourist railroads preferred
