About The Position

The Division of Capitol Square Services (DCSS) is a customer-focused organization whose primary function is to provide a quality environment for the approximately 75 state agencies that occupy the facilities overseen by DGS. DCSS provides its customers effective and timely operational, maintenance, and repair services, as well as manages capital outlay projects and provides professional services contracts for statewide public body use. DCSS is responsible for over 40 buildings and 20 parking facilities and operates and maintains about 6.45 million square feet of buildings and grounds at the seat of government to include the Governor's Mansion, the Virginia Capitol and Capitol Square. The Locksmith is responsible for the installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of all locking systems, door hardware, and security devices throughout the Capitol Square complex. This role supports the safety and security of state facilities, employees, and visitors by ensuring all locking mechanisms and related hardware remain functional and reliable.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, hardware schedules, and related technical documents.
  • Proficiency with locksmith software programs and key‑management systems.
  • Skilled in bypassing or picking locks, rekeying, installing, and repairing a wide range of lock types, styles, and brands.
  • Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining commercial locksets, cylinders, door hardware, and related security components.
  • Knowledge of commercial locksets, master key systems, electronic access components, ADA requirements, building codes, and basic carpentry.
  • Ability to cut keys accurately and maintain detailed, accurate records of master key systems and issued keys.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving locking system issues.
  • Ability to work independently, provide effective customer service, respond to emergencies, and perform physically demanding tasks as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a locksmith apprenticeship or formal locksmith training program.
  • Hands‑on experience developing and maintaining master key systems.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and maintain locks, door hardware, and security devices.
  • Modify and upgrade locking systems as needed to support facility security.
  • Develop, generate, and maintain master key systems.
  • Respond promptly to work orders, emergency calls, and tenant service needs.
  • Provide technical expertise and customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support carpentry‑related tasks involving doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Maintain accurate records of keys, lock changes, and security hardware.
