The Local P&D Driver (Class A - Fully Endorsed) at Estes Express Lines is responsible for safely operating a tractor/trailer to transport freight while adhering to all relevant laws and regulations. This role requires a skilled driver capable of handling various terrains and environmental conditions, ensuring the security of equipment and cargo, and maintaining compliance with FMCSA regulations. The driver will also conduct inspections, report maintenance issues, and provide professional service to customers.

  • Operate all types of equipment to perform safety functions, including manual transmission and chaining tires.
  • Safely operate a tractor/trailer in accordance with Company, Federal, State, and Local laws.
  • Maintain records required for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Comply with requirements for the safe transportation of hazardous materials.
  • Ensure security of equipment and cargo.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tractor and trailer.
  • Check gauges and visual indicators for malfunctions and ensure seals or locks on trailers are intact.
  • Report maintenance problems to Fleet Services and/or supervision promptly.
  • Verify unit numbers versus paperwork and report discrepancies to the supervisor.
  • Use in-cab technology, including electronic logs, as required.
  • Drive different schedules and work the dock based on business needs.
  • Occasionally run over-the-road as dictated by business needs.
  • Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
  • Assist with dock work, including loading/unloading freight as needed.
  • High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent education and experience.
  • 21 years of age required per FMCSA regulations with 1 year of driving experience.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Reside within 75 miles of the domiciled terminal or work assignment.
  • HazMat, Tanker, and Doubles endorsements required.
  • Ability to drive a tractor trailer conforming to FMCSA requirements.
  • Stable employment history preferred.
  • Ability to operate a forklift (minimum 7,500 lb. vehicle).
  • Physical capability to push or pull a loaded pallet jack and/or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lbs.
  • Ability to perform physical activities including standing, lifting, twisting, turning, and climbing a ladder.
  • Capability to drop/hook and couple trailers, involving cranking landing gear and pulling 5th wheel pin with approximately 65 lbs. of pressure.
  • Familiarity with state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations.
  • Pass a FMCSA required medical exam and road test.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA's requirements to speak and read English.
  • Experience with electronic logging devices (ELDs).
  • Knowledge of local and regional routes.
