About The Position

The School of Agriculture at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral research fellow (#K98020) to join our interdisciplinary team focused on advancing the understanding and mitigation of methane emissions from cattle. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in sustainable agriculture, animal science, and environmental stewardship. This is a one-year temporary appointment with a possible annual renewal for up to three years. The start date for the appointment is as early as March 1, 2025. The successful candidate will have the following: Strong background in ruminant physiology, biochemistry, or methane emission quantification techniques. Experience with statistical analysis and data interpretation using tools such as SAS, R, Python, or similar. Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Requirements

  • A terminal degree in animal science or a closely related agricultural science discipline is required by the appointment date.
  • Strong background in ruminant physiology, biochemistry, or methane emission quantification techniques.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data interpretation using tools such as SAS, R, Python, or similar.
  • Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants with familiarity of feed science and nutrition strategies for reducing methane, experience in experimental design involving food animal species, and knowledge of agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation strategies will receive special consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement experiments to measure and analyze methane emissions from cattle using advanced techniques (e.g., gas chromatography).
  • Develop and assess mitigation strategies including the use of feed additives in cattle.
  • Provide technical assistance to participating producers for on-farm trials.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including agronomists, biochemists, plant scientists, and extension agents.
  • Publish findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students and assist in grant writing to support ongoing research initiatives.
  • Participate in outreach activities.
