About The Position

The Video Production Engineer position supports video technology use and maintenance needs for the Frost School of Music (FSOM). This needs include the use of such technology in our concert halls, classrooms, recording studios, and faculty studios. This person is responsible for technical design and troubleshooting for event and recorded productions, as well as contributing to the maintenance, configuration, and design of multimedia production systems as it applies to FSOM operations. The Video Production Engineer will leverage knowledge of existing systems and services, as well as capabilities available in the marketplace, to create the most effective solutions to meet the media and live event needs of the School. The candidate must use independent discretion and judgment to prioritize tasks and provide recommendations regarding issues. The Production Engineer will report to the Director of Production Services. The position requires a high level of independent proficiency in setting up and operating audio and video production equipment for recording studios, concert halls and other FSOM facilities. The individual will often work with students and must exhibit an ability to train and mentor volunteers of various skills levels and to interact with faculty and staff in reinforcing School policies, practices, and procedures. This position requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate coverage for evening and/or weekend productions and events.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with completion of a 1-year program of study from a vocational/technical school.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience in live production, including operation of Tricaster, Blackmagic switchers, and managing redundant systems in live broadcast environments.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Extensive familiarity with live video recording, broadcast equipment, and live streaming technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of production scheduling, troubleshooting, and system setup with an emphasis on creating redundancy systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, especially in fast-paced environments.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and be able to effectively work in a team-oriented and fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift at least 40-50 lbs and stand for extended periods when required for production setup and equipment maintenance.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge of industry-standard post production software such as DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro.
  • Hands-on experience with video projection mapping and its integration into live performances and broadcast events.
  • Strong understanding of both Apple and Windows operating systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Video Production Manager and Director of Production Services in audio-visual recording, live streaming, and broadcasting of concerts, recitals, and live events, ensuring optimal video and audio quality.
  • Operate Tricaster systems, Blackmagic video switchers, and other professional-grade live production equipment to manage multi-camera setups, video switching, graphics integration, and live broadcasts.
  • Set up and implement redundancy systems for all critical broadcast equipment, including backup signal paths, redundant power supplies, and failover protocols to ensure no disruption during live broadcasts.
  • Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and hardware/software updates for all studio editing and recording systems; document equipment issues and software bugs, addressing them promptly to minimize production downtime.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor student engineers in live production settings, guiding them in equipment setup, troubleshooting, and production techniques.
  • Provide audio-visual technical assistance for FSOM programs, classes, and marketing platforms, ensuring reliability and high-quality live streaming and broadcast performance across multiple channels.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of production equipment in various media production facilities used by students, faculty, and staff.
  • Export, publish, and distribute final audio/video content to broadcast, web streaming, social media, and mobile platforms.
  • Keep detailed records, logs, and transcripts of all production activities, ensuring accurate documentation of equipment usage and production processes.
  • Edit, transcode, and assemble final video/audio material for post-production.
  • Work closely with the Production Services team to maintain and support all AV equipment across rehearsal halls, classrooms, faculty studios, and multimedia labs.
  • Collaborate with FSOM's IT liaison to coordinate and optimize the integration of audio-visual technologies across the institution.
  • Continuously assess production equipment and facilities to identify areas for improvement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including on-call support during live events.
