About The Position

Santa Fe South Middle School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Reading Foundations Teacher to support struggling readers in grades 6-7. This role provides targeted, small-group instruction (approximately 15 students per class) focused on building critical foundational reading skills, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The Reading Foundations Teacher works alongside ELA teachers and academic teams to supplement students’ core English Language Arts instruction. This position plays a critical role in closing skill gaps, accelerating literacy growth, and ensuring students can successfully access grade-level content. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of the science of reading and structured literacy practices and is committed to continuous improvement for both students and themselves.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

  • A deep commitment to literacy development and equity
  • Experience supporting struggling readers, particularly in grades 6–8
  • Knowledge of structured literacy approaches and the science of reading
  • Strong small-group instructional and classroom management skills
  • A growth mindset, flexibility, and openness to feedback and coaching
  • A collaborative spirit and desire to contribute to schoolwide literacy efforts

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Reading, or a related field
  • Reading Specialist certification or endorsement
  • LETRS or other science of reading training
  • Experience teaching elementary or middle school reading

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct, small-group reading instruction to middle school students identified as needing foundational literacy support
  • Design and deliver daily lessons grounded in evidence-based practices aligned to the science of reading
  • Target instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
  • Monitor and assess student progress using formative and summative data, adjusting instruction as needed
  • Collaborate closely with ELA teachers, academic intervention teams, and school leadership to align reading support with classroom instruction
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with families and instructional staff regarding student progress
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and academically focused classroom culture
  • Participate in professional development, team meetings, and school-wide events
  • Contribute to the ongoing work of building a joyful, high-performing school community
