About the position

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and in collaboration with the K-12 Supervisor of Humanities and the building principals, the Literacy Coach will play a crucial role in facilitating ongoing professional development for teachers. The Literacy Coach will offer workshops, coaching sessions, modeling and collaborative planning opportunities to empower teachers to enhance their literacy teaching skills and stay current with best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Support teacher development by planning, delivering, and assessing tailored instruction while providing ongoing coaching, mentoring, and professional development to enhance literacy instruction.
  • Exhibit knowledge of state and national standards in English Language Arts (ELA).
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Science of Reading and a solid mastery of evidence-based practices supported by this research.
  • Demonstrate expertise in ELA curricula and utilize a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) to address diverse student learning needs.
  • Implement exemplary research-based interventions and use data to inform instruction.
  • Analyze student performance data to identify areas for improvement and develop targeted action plans to enhance literacy outcomes.
  • Collaborate effectively with faculty, administrators, and parents to support students in meeting grade-level standards.
  • Work closely with teachers to design and implement effective literacy instruction tailored to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Foster a safe and trusting space for teachers to share concerns and seek assistance.
  • Provide comprehensive in-class support for all educators, including content and special education instructors.
  • Facilitate effective co-planning routines, promoting a positive teaching culture.
  • Lead and participate in school-wide literacy programs, events, and initiatives that promote reading and writing across all grade levels.
  • Report to and collaborate with the Office of Curriculum and Instruction to create and implement professional development plans.
  • Other duties assigned by a supervisor.

Requirements

  • NYS Certification in Literacy, Reading, Students with Disabilities and/or English 6-12.
  • Highly organized and responsible, servicing as a positive role model.
  • Strong multitasking abilities with a commitment to high-quality work.
  • Proven experience as a classroom teacher with a strong background in literacy education.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of current literacy research, instructional practices, and assessment strategies.
