About The Position

Lamar County Primary School has been identified by the Georgia Department of Education as a Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school. The Literacy Specialist will serve as a key leader in implementing targeted literacy interventions and strategies to address the needs of students who are not performing on grade level. This role will support staff development, provide direct student instruction, and drive literacy improvement initiatives to close achievement gaps.

Requirements

  • Valid Georgia teaching certification in Early Childhood Education or Reading Specialist endorsement
  • Training in structured literacy approaches (e.g., LETRS, Orton-Gillingham)
  • Minimum 10 years of successful classroom teaching experience in reading or literacy-focused instruction
  • Strong knowledge of the Science of Reading and evidence-based instructional practices

Nice To Haves

  • Coaching or leadership experience (academic coach, mentor teacher, etc.)
  • Experience working within MTSS frameworks

Responsibilities

  • Support teachers in implementing evidence-based literacy instruction aligned with GSE and Science of Reading.
  • Co-plan, model, and co-teach literacy lessons in collaboration with grade-level teams.
  • Facilitate professional development on effective reading instruction and intervention strategies.
  • Lead PLCs and data teams focused on improving reading outcomes.
  • Administer, identify, and monitor students performing below grade level using diagnostic tools (iReady Reading, iReady Math, iReady Literacy Task (Dyslexia Screener), GMAS, etc.).
  • Provide small-group or individual literacy intervention aligned with Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) during and after school.
  • Track progress and adjust instruction based on data.
  • Analyze reading performance data to determine trends and instructional gaps.
  • Collaborate with teachers of Students With Disabilities (SWD) and intervention teams to develop and monitor reading support plans.
  • Assist teachers with ongoing formative assessment and reading diagnostics.
  • Ensure effective use of 1003a grant-funded materials, resources, and instructional programs.
  • Collaborate in revising and implementing the schoolwide literacy improvement plan.
  • Monitor fidelity of Tier I, II, and III instruction across classrooms.
  • Coordinate parent involvement activities such as family literacy nights.
  • Provide take-home resources and workshops for families to support literacy at home.
