About The Position

Under the direction of library management, the Literacy Associate 2 (intern) performs a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of public service operations at the library, including service at the Customer Service, Reference, and Children’s desks. This position greets patrons entering the library, provides excellent customer service, and assists with general library services and literacy-related support. In addition, this role supports literacy programming and educational services by assisting with literacy-focused activities, outreach efforts, and partnerships that help promote reading, learning, and community engagement. The Literacy Associate 2 may also represent the library at community events and other outreach opportunities to promote literacy and educational programs. Hours per Week: 20 Notice: This position is fully grant-funded and dependent on continued funding through the California State Library ESL Grant, which is currently approved through June 30, 2026.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Two years of library experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of library systems and databases preferred
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Multilingual speaking a plus.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include a combination of days, evenings and weekends
  • Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lifting of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to 50 pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials with a buddy system.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.

Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service to patrons and visitors.
  • Assists patrons with locating materials, finding the appropriate service desk, using library computers, and understanding library procedures such as checking out materials, logging on to the internet, and making copies.
  • Checks in, processes, and shelves library materials as needed.
  • Accepts and processes fines, fees, and other payments.
  • Provides information regarding library programs, events, services, and use of library spaces, including conference rooms, as applicable.
  • Addresses patron conduct or safety concerns and escalates issues to appropriate management when needed.
  • Works closely with Librarians and library management to plan, implement, and promote programs and activities.
  • Supports literacy and educational service efforts, including collaboration with local schools and community partners, as assigned.
  • Assists with the preparation of, or independently leads, activities such as storytimes, crafts, and other educational or enrichment programs.
  • Assists with library opening and closing procedures, as needed.
  • Interacts effectively with a diverse population and supports additional assignments as directed by management.
  • Knows and understands the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement, and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of public library service.
  • In addition to these freedoms, supports client discretion regarding materials available at the local library(ies).
  • Follows all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and the custodianship of patron records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
