HRL is seeking an experienced Linux Systems Administrator specialized in High Performance Computing (HPC) to join the Special Programs IT team in Malibu, CA. The successful candidate will collaborate with other systems engineers located in Malibu and at various locations throughout the United States. A willingness to continue learning new technologies is a must. An active Secret clearance and experience in classified programs is required.

  • Perform a multi-disciplined range of technical system and application activities
  • Research, selection, planning, and implementation of new technologies to support scaling of applications to meet business needs
  • Install, configure, and maintain multiplatform systems hardware, software, and components
  • Administer and manage Linux systems servers and workstations in the operations, engineering, analysis, and test environments
  • Administer installation of software, hardware, file system management, backups, process control, user administration, and device management
  • Resolve a wide variety of complex system failures, troubleshooting software, hardware, and network problems
  • Perform system and user account maintenance
  • Monitor, evaluate, and optimize system performance
  • Analyze, test, and implement security patches and hardening
  • Document maintenance actions
  • Develop and promote standard operating procedures and conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines
  • Assist in IT security incident response and documentation if required
  • Manage the day-to-day system administration of Linux-based cluster computing and storage environments, and associated network infrastructure
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster architectures and concepts
  • Strong understanding of cluster management software (e.g., HPE Performance Cluster Manager, Warewulf, Bright Cluster Manager, Aspen Cluster Management Environment, OneSIS)
  • Familiarity with job scheduling (e.g., Slurm)
  • Experience in Linux systems administration
  • Understanding of multiplatform system hardening (e.g., DISA STIG, SCAP)
  • Experience integrating Linux systems into an Active Directory environment
  • Experience with high performance computing networking protocols (e.g., InfiniBand)
  • Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (8, 9)
  • Experience with Ubuntu Linux (20.04, 22.04)
  • Experience with scripting for task automation (e.g., shell scripting, Python, Perl)
  • Experience with systems management and automation software (e.g., Satellite, Foreman, Ansible)
  • Experience with networking fundamentals (e.g., switching, routing, firewalls, load balancing)
  • Experience with system monitoring & alerting tools (e.g., Nagios)
  • Experience working within an accredited system
  • Ability to work independently or in a development team, and effectively estimate time and effort required to complete tasks
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, prepare project plans, schedules, effectively manage projects in areas of responsibility, complete tasks, projects in a timely manner
  • An active Secret U.S. Security Clearance
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a related role
  • A current Top Secret/SCI security clearance with in-scope polygraph is preferred
  • Understanding of VMware vSphere virtual environments
  • Experience in multiplatform environments (Windows and Linux)
  • Experience with Privileged Access Management platforms (e.g., Centrify, Delinea)
  • Experience with file transfer protocols (e.g., SMB, NFS, iSCSI)
  • Experience with hardened Linux configurations (i.e., fapolicyd, SELinux)
  • Experience with container management/orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with administration of web and database servers (e.g., Nginx, Apache, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Development tools and pipelines (e.g., GitLab, Artifactory, Terraform)
  • Proficient knowledge of cyber security technology and trends (e.g., least privilege, RBAC, Zero Trust)
  • Understanding of package management tools (e.g., RPM, DEB)
  • Base salary range for this full-time position is $120,715 - $150,895 + bonus + benefits
  • Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location
  • Individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training
