About The Position

The Linux/HPC Administrator at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is responsible for managing the Institute's scientific computing environment, focusing on the integrity, security, and performance of Linux operating systems. This role involves installing, configuring, and updating Linux systems, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring system reliability and efficiency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required; Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Network Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another scientific or technical field preferred.
  • At least three years of professional experience with Red Hat/CentOS or Ubuntu.
  • Experience with life science informatics applications and environments.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to document, track and execute requirements, policies, procedures, and system modifications.
  • Ability to work with others in a constructive and collaborative manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with virtualization/container technologies (VMware, Apptainer, Docker, KVM, etc.).
  • Cluster management experience (Slurm preferred).
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (S3, EC2).
  • Network-attached storage (NAS) configuration and maintenance.
  • Automation using shell/Python.
  • Deployment and maintenance of web servers (Apache, nginx).
  • Database maintenance (MySQL/MariaDB).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the management of the Institute's centralized computer cluster and associated storage.
  • Configure systems in alignment with security best practices.
  • Perform and validate system backup and monitoring.
  • Apply required system and application patches; package management; third-party software installation and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues and provide user support.
  • Configure Linux servers/workstations.
  • Support for lab Linux workstations and servers.
  • Perform other related tasks, duties and responsibilities as required, assigned or directed.
