About The Position

The Linux Engineer designs, implements, and maintains Linux‑based infrastructure that supports mission‑critical enterprise applications at Applied Medical. In addition to managing core server platforms, this role helps guide the transition of select user‑facing systems to Linux, ensuring smooth adoption through strong communication, documentation, and operational discipline. This position requires deep Linux expertise, comfort working within an ITIL framework, and the ability to support both technical teams and end users through platform changes.

Requirements

  • obtain a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related technical field, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
  • demonstrate a minimum of seven years of experience in Linux system administration or Linux engineering within enterprise environments.
  • demonstrate advanced expertise administering Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and other enterprise Linux distributions.
  • apply strong scripting skills using Bash, Python, or similar scripting languages to automate system tasks and workflows.
  • demonstrate experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware and KubeVirt and containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • demonstrate proficiency with automation and infrastructure as code tools such as Ansible, Terraform, and GitHub for configuration and deployment management.
  • demonstrate strong understanding of networking, storage systems, monitoring and observability tools, and enterprise security principles.
  • demonstrate strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills while working across cross-functional engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • demonstrate experience with Kubernetes management platforms such as Rancher, OpenShift, or Tanzu.
  • demonstrate familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI or CD) pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • obtain industry certifications such as Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS), or similar Linux certifications.
  • demonstrate knowledge of identity management systems including Active Directory objects and group policy.
  • demonstrate experience supporting domain name system (DNS), secure sockets layer (SSL) certificates, and single sign-on (SSO) technologies.
  • demonstrate familiarity with software-defined networking (SDN), global server load balancing (GSLB), and enterprise networking concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain Linux servers across Ubuntu, RHEL, and other distributions in physical, virtual, and containerized environments.
  • Perform OS upgrades, patching, configuration management, and system hardening to meet enterprise security and compliance requirements.
  • Implement automation for provisioning, configuration management, and monitoring using tools such as Ansible, shell scripting, Python, and PowerShell.
  • Provide Tier 3 support for complex Linux‑related incidents and escalations.
  • Support the migration of standalone user‑facing systems to Linux, including planning, rollout, and post‑deployment support.
  • Communicate effectively with end users and business teams to explain changes, gather requirements, and address concerns.
  • Develop clear documentation, training materials, and operational procedures to support adoption and minimize disruption.
  • Work within an ITIL framework, including Change Requests, Incident/Problem Management, and structured release processes.
  • Prepare and submit change documentation, perform risk assessments, and participate in CAB reviews.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, runbooks, and technical standards.
  • Apply security best practices including vulnerability management, access control, and system auditing.
  • Collaborate with application, database, network, and cloud teams to support enterprise systems and platform reliability.
  • Recommend improvements that enhance scalability, performance, and operational efficiency.
