Lineworker Apprentice Learn and perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in the construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution of electrical service for the City of Grand Island. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry level class in the line worker series. This class is distinguished from the Lineworker First Class by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited work experience. WORKING ENVIRONMENT Duties are performed both indoors and out. Indoor work is typically performed in a workshop setting. While working outdoors, incumbent is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Duties may also require the incumbent to work in confined spaces, i.e. manholes. Lineworker First Class DEFINITION Perform skilled and specialized work in the construction, maintenance and operation of an electrical distribution, transmission, overhead and underground systems; and perform a variety of other duties and responsibilities involved in providing electrical utility services for the City. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced journey level position. This class is distinguished from the Lineworker Apprentice by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series by having significant knowledge of the electric distribution and transmission system in the City of Grand Island and the ability to work on and sometimes oversee work on all types of energized equipment and lines. As the most advanced lineworker, the Lineworker First Class is responsible for ensuring the safety of all subordinate line staff working with him/her. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Duties are performed both indoors and out. Indoor work is typically performed in a workshop setting. While working outdoors, incumbent is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Duties may also require the incumbent to work in confined spaces, i.e. manholes.
