About The Position

Under general supervision, performs journeyman level work in the construction, operation, maintenance, restoration, and testing of overhead/underground distribution and transmission facilities, including fiber optic cable systems, to ensure uninterrupted, dependable service is provided to customers. Job requires general knowledge of the standards, practices, methods, techniques and procedures for installing and maintaining cables, transformers, poles and related equipment, sufficient to perform a range of routine tasks. Procedures are established and a number of specific guidelines are available requiring judgment in locating and selecting the most appropriate methods, techniques and procedures to apply to specific cases. Solves routine or recurring problems and identifies and suggests solutions to more complex problems. Work is reviewed upon completion for technical accuracy and compliance with instructions or established procedures. Regular contact with employees in other work groups and occasional contact with individuals outside the organization is required to obtain, clarify or provide information. May be required to work a variety of shift schedules on a rotational basis. May be required to remain on call 24 hours a day to maintain 24-hour, 7 day per week service. Performs and/or monitors the work of others engaged in the construction, installation, maintenance, testing, inspection, operation, repair and restoration of overhead/underground electrical facilities and performs installation of fiber optic cable. Provides technical training to apprentices. Performs pole handling, hauling, climbing, setting and framing tasks. Installs and connects overhead wire and underground conduit and cable, overhead/underground transformers, street lighting and primary and secondary phasing. Performs wire and cable pulling, splicing and terminating. Installs and maintains underground manhole ductbanks and transformer vaults. Troubleshoots and performs overhead and underground maintenance inspection and repair. Installs conduit under driveways and roads. Performs tree trimming and landscaping to restore customer property. Assists in system restoration, system grounding and underground cable locates. Operates and maintains construction equipment, including vehicle combinations with gross vehicle weight ratings of 26,000 pounds or more such as cargo, bucket, digger, derrick or semi-tractor trucks with crane or lowboy, flatbed, cable, cargo or pole trailers. Operates truck tankers with a capacity of over 1,000 gallons of liquids. Operates hazardous waste handling facility. Performs receiving storage, sampling, loss testing, repairing, painting and salvaging of distribution transformers. Tests and repairs voltage regulators, sectionalizers and reclosers, and hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and gasoline powered tools. Performs dielectric safety testing and repair of switch sticks, shotguns and bucket trucks. Cleans and tests personal protective rubber goods. Enforces safety rules, encourages safe work practices and corrects unsafe conditions and behaviors. Performs other job-related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a certified apprenticeship program and a minimum of two (2) years overhead electrical distribution work experience at the journey level.
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.
  • A Class A CDL with N or equivalent endorsement is required within 6 months of employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.
  • Ability to maintain vision correctable to 20/40; distinguish primary colors; hearing capabilities of 500 to 2000 Hertz and 25 decibels or better in one or both ears.
