About The Position

The Line Worker Apprentice position at FirstEnergy is designed for individuals eager to start a career in the electric utility industry. This role involves supporting operations by providing and maintaining service to customers while learning the day-to-day operations of the distribution system. Apprentices will gain hands-on experience with tools, materials, and equipment, and will participate in a combination of skills training, on-the-job training, and academic training. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress in their job class based on performance.

Requirements

  • Must reside within a 40-minute radius of the Service Center located in Mansfield, PA.
  • Must possess a valid State of Pennsylvania Operator's License and meet the Company’s driving requirements.
  • Must possess the ability to acquire a valid DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate.
  • Must pass motor vehicle operator tests prescribed by the Company and acquire a valid Class A Commercial Drivers' License with necessary endorsements.
  • Ability to work safely and follow safety rules and regulations, especially when working on or near energized lines and equipment.
  • Physical and mental ability to climb and work aloft safely from poles and structures.
  • Ability to lift and handle up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to learn the layout, functions, and operation of electrical equipment and circuit connections of the distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of first aid, safety, and resuscitation practices as prescribed by the Company.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in all weather conditions.
  • Availability to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and respond to callouts.

Responsibilities

  • Support the operations process in providing and maintaining service to customers.
  • Learn the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system.
  • Gain working knowledge of computer systems, tools, materials, and equipment used on the job.
  • Perform complicated construction and maintenance on deenergized, tested, and grounded primary conductors, structures, and equipment under supervision.
  • Work on energized conductors, structures, and equipment not exceeding 600 volts under supervision.
  • Install instruments and equipment under supervision.
  • Attend and complete all necessary training as prescribed by the Company, including pole top resuscitation.
  • Drive and operate Company vehicles as assigned.
  • Perform less-skilled work as required or directed, including the operation of transportation equipment.
