About The Position

Utilizes knowledge of the CWW system, GIS, GPS, maps, and electronic line location devices to locate and mark underground water and sewer mains and service lines as requested and per established guidelines and regulations. Manages and directs work flow for all locate requests. Performs heavy manual labor and operates required mechanical equipment. Exercises responsibility for upkeep and preventative maintenance of all equipment used by Locators. Works under the supervision of the Distribution Supervisor. However, much of the assigned work is performed alone, with no direct supervision. Supervises four Line Locators and is responsible for their training in the operation of all related equipment and proper locating methods. Attends all applicable seminars and training given by Columbus Water Works and reviews locate rules and regulations to stay updated on changes. In addition, all other functions and responsibilities as assigned. Performs on-call duty and required to respond to emergency calls.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is the minimum requirement.
  • One year of line locating experience or three years of water distribution or wastewater collection system experience required.
  • Work experience reading maps and blueprints required.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License and a good driving record required.
  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and work outside in all weather conditions required.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Standard certificates within one year of employment required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as drawings, maps, safety rules, and MSDS material.
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and record keeping.
  • Ability to communicate with contractors and customers as needed.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to draw and graphs.
  • Ability to apply commonsense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Must be able to obtain Fort Benning Access required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience utilizing GPS, GIS mapping, and electronic line location devices preferred.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and directs work flow for all locate requests and coordinates as necessary with the Field Services Supervisor to complete jobs as required. Retrieves locate tickets from Korterra Software. Insures locate ticket responses are entered correctly in Korterra Software.
  • Utilizes knowledge of the CWW system, GIS, GPS, maps, and electronic line location devices to locate and mark underground water and sewer mains and service lines as requested and per established guidelines and regulations. Heavy manual labor is sometimes required.
  • Interacts with contractors and customers as necessary to complete locate requests. Reviews plans for major locate projects with other utilities and contractors. Assists Engineering department with locates for capital projects.
  • Maintains appropriate records of locate work performed including ticket totals and GPS downloads. Insures locating supplies and equipment are maintained properly.
  • Reviews locate rules and regulations to stay updated on changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs on-call duty.
  • Assists Field Services Supervisor with coordinating, supervising, purchasing and other duties when needed.
  • Checks Water Leaks
  • Orders, stocks, and issues PPE and other equipment to Team Members.
