About the position

A Lighting Service Technician is a skilled professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and optimization of various lighting systems, including traditional, LED, and specialty lighting solutions. This role is critical in ensuring the functionality, safety, and energy efficiency of lighting installations across commercial, industrial, and sometimes residential settings. The position requires a blend of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and customer service to support clients in diverse environments, often working under tight deadlines or in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Install new lighting systems, including fixtures, LED drivers, ballasts, and controls, following blueprints, schematics, or client specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks to ensure lighting systems operate efficiently, identifying wear, corrosion, or electrical issues.
  • Respond to service calls for lighting failures, conducting diagnostics to pinpoint problems (e.g., burned-out bulbs, faulty wiring, or driver malfunctions).
  • Execute retrofits from traditional lighting (e.g., fluorescent, incandescent) to energy-efficient LED systems, including driver replacements and system recalibrations to optimize performance and reduce energy costs.
  • Ensure all installations and repairs comply with local electrical codes, safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, NEC), and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Communicate with clients to assess needs, explain technical issues, and provide recommendations for lighting solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records of service calls, repairs, and installations, including parts used, labor hours, and compliance documentation.
  • Work with engineers, project managers, or other technicians to support large-scale lighting projects, such as commercial retrofits or new construction.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a technical or vocational program in electrical systems, lighting technology, or a related field preferred.
  • 2-5 years of experience in lighting installation, electrical repair, or a related trade.
  • Proficiency with electrical tools (e.g., multimeters, wire strippers, voltage testers) and lighting-specific equipment.
  • Knowledge of wiring diagrams, blueprints, and lighting control systems.
  • Valid electrician's license or certification (e.g., NICET, ETL) and OSHA safety training recommended.

Nice-to-haves

  • An electrician apprenticeship or certification (e.g., Journeyman Electrician) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with LED systems, dimming controls (e.g., 0-10V), and energy management solutions is highly desirable.
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Osram, Philips) may enhance candidacy.

Benefits

  • Negotiable salary range.
