About The Position

Operates light equipment as utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of roads, rights-of-way, bridges, and storm drainage systems; performs related work as assigned. Works under the close supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to vehicular equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in road and bridge maintenance work.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions, excavation sites.
  • General understanding and able to use Rock maps.
  • Valve main on and off.
  • Basic knowledge of iPad and computer skills.
  • A high school Diploma or GED is required.
  • Some experience required involving the use of light to medium sized equipment, some of which must have been related to construction, repair and/or maintenance is referred.
  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License and clear driving record is required. A Class B CDL is required.
  • Must be minimum of 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • May operate bobcat, skid steer, backhoe, UTV/Gator, crew truck, tractor mowers, or other light vehicle in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • May operate machinery as department needs require.
  • Works with and assists as part of a crew in digging ditches, repairing bridges, laying pipe, spreading asphalt and/or any other related work as necessary.
  • May be responsible for grounds maintenance’
  • Occasionally operates heavy equipment that does not require a CDL.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Other duties as assigned, examples- making water taps, repairing leaks, leak detecting
  • May be required to work a stagger shift, depending on weather conditions if department needs require.
  • May be required to work “on-call” duty as assigned by Director of Utilities or another authorized Supervisor.
  • Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or as assigned.
