The Lift Station Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of lift station equipment and related infrastructure within wastewater collection systems. The technician ensures the efficient operation of pumps, electrical systems, control panels, and backup generators, contributing to the overall reliability and safety of the municipal or industrial water systems.

  • Operate and monitor lift station systems, ensuring pumps, motors, and electrical systems are functioning properly.
  • Use SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems or similar monitoring systems to track system performance and detect potential issues.
  • Adjust settings and make real-time decisions to prevent downtime.
  • Perform regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of lift station equipment, including pumps, valves, electrical circuits, and control systems.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues to ensure systems are functioning optimally.
  • Perform cleaning, lubricating, and other routine tasks to maintain equipment longevity.
  • Respond to lift station alarms, power outages, or system failures and coordinate with other staff or departments for corrective action.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues during off-hours or in emergency situations, minimizing service disruptions.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, health and safety standards, and company procedures.
  • Use appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) when handling hazardous materials or performing potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Maintain proper documentation of service, repairs, inspections, and safety protocols.
  • Prepare reports on maintenance activities, repairs, and system performance, providing updates for supervisors or department managers.
  • Maintain accurate records of parts inventory, equipment warranties, and repair histories.
  • Recommend system improvements, upgrades, or replacement of outdated components.
  • Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of lift station systems, pumps, motors, and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and remote monitoring technologies.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and wastewater systems.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and outdoor environments.
  • Typically requires 2-5 years of experience in wastewater, pump systems, or related technical fields.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor in outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted; occasionally required to lift heavier objects with assistance or mechanical aids.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights, including ladders, scaffolding, or into vaults, manholes, and tanks.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle tools, operate valves, and use instrumentation or control devices.
  • Visual and auditory ability to detect, identify, and diagnose equipment malfunctions or leaks in piping and system components.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection, safety harnesses, gloves, and protective clothing.
  • Able to safely enter and work in hazardous environments including those with strong odors, loud noise, and potential chemical exposure.
  • Must maintain physical readiness to respond quickly to emergency repairs or system failures, including after-hours or on-call assignments.
  • Certification in wastewater treatment or related fields (e.g., WEF certification, OSHA training) is preferred but not required
  • Electrical or mechanical certifications (e.g., Journeyman status) a plus.
  • Experience with lift station systems, pumps, motors, and electrical components is highly preferred.
